Three Nebraska women’s golfers concluded action at the Big O Classic at the par-73 Oak Hills Country Club in Omaha on Tuesday. Ariel Gonzalez, Lena Hassert and Brooke Bream were playing as individuals in the tournament that featured nine teams in the field.
Gonzalez led the trio of Huskers by finishing in a tie for ninth place in her first collegiate competition. The freshman from Merida, Mexico finished with a 54-hole score of 233. After rounds of 79 and 73 on Monday, Gonzalez finished with an 81 on Tuesday.
Hassert was two shots behind Gonzalez at 235, good for a tie for 14th place. Hassert posted an 82 in Tuesday’s final round. Husker redshirt freshman Brooke Bream finished 57th overall at 259 with a final round of 87.
Creighton’s Eleanor Hudepohl was the tournament champion with an even-par 219 (70-74-75). Wichita State won the team title with a score of 926, edging Creighton (928) by two strokes.
The full Husker squad is back in action next week at the Dale McNamara Invitational. The University of Tulsa will host the tournament at Cedar Ridge Country Club in Broken Arrow, Okla., on Oct. 10-11. The Huskers have played in two tournaments as a team so far this fall, winning the Badger Invitational team title in Wisconsin and finishing second at the Green Wave Classic in New Orleans. Nebraska is ranked No. 20 in the Mizuno WGCA Coaches Poll and No. 21 by Golfweek.
