Sampson Zheng Earns Top-20 Individual Finish In Three-Day Tournament
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The California men’s golf team finished in a tie for ninth place at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational after shooting a 10-over-par 298 in the third round on Wednesday.
The Golden Bears (309-296-298 – 903, +39) tied UNLV and finished five strokes behind eighth-place UCLA (+34) at the three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Arkansas at Blessings Golf Club. Texas A&M (-11) placed first while the Aggies’ Daniel Rodrigues (-11) earned individual medalist honors.
Junior Sampson Zheng was the Bears’ top individual finisher, as he climbed four spots into a tie for 18th with a 1-over-par 73 on Wednesday. Zheng, who carded a 5-over-par 221 for the tournament, registered three consecutive birdies on holes 1-3 to overcome four bogeys throughout his final round. He was closely followed by fellow junior Aaron Du, who tied for 22nd at 6-over-par overall and shot a 1-over-par 73 Wednesday.
Four Bears shot even par or better on the front nine Wednesday, including both Zheng and Jeewon Park at 2-under-par.
