Bears Continue To Face Tough Competition

Seven Ranked Teams Included In Field At Stanford Intercollegiate

The Cal women’s golf team will continue to test itself against the best in the nation when it competes at the Stanford Intercollegiate this weekend at Stanford Golf Course.

Seven of the 18 teams in the field are ranked in this week’s top-25 while another two received votes in the latest WGCA Coaches Poll.

The Bears are coming off a seventh-place finish at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., earlier this month in which six of the 11 participating teams were nationally ranked.

Cal also received votes in the latest WGCA Poll, putting it 29th in the country.

“It’s a really strong field,” Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel said. “It’s good for us. We want to be playing in fields like this.”

Three of the teams in this weekend’s field are ranked in the top-10 – No. 1 Stanford, No. 8 Texas and No. 10 Virginia. The tourney also features No. 11 USC, No. 12 Arizona State, No. 16 Florida and No. 19 San Jose State.

Not only was the competition stiff at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational, but the event was played on the grueling 6,422-yard Blessings Golf Course.

“We learned a lot at the Blessings,” McDaniel said. “We took it up a notch in terms of course management. We are putting that into play now.”

The Bears are going with the same lineup for the third tournament in a row to start the season – junior Cristina Ochoa, graduate student Annika Borrelli, sophomore Jieming Yang, junior Mika Jin and freshman Adora Liu. Senior Tzu-Yi Chang is playing as an individual.

“They are the ones who are consistently shooting the scores to play in the tournaments,” McDaniel said. “We have a super competitive atmosphere that all 11 players are bringing to qualifying, but these are the six that were on top of the pack last week.”

The 54-hole tournament runs Friday-Sunday. Cal tees off at 7:30 a.m. on Friday.
