Nick Dunlap Shares the Clubhouse Lead After Day One of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate


ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Freshman Nick Dunlap carded a 7-under par 65 and is the co-leader after Friday’s opening round of play at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate. Behind the play of Dunlap and JP Cave, who shot a 3-under par 69, the No. 12-ranked Crimson Tide finished the day with a team score of 8-under par 280 and is in a tie for fourth overall entering Saturday’s second round of play.

Dunlap, who recorded his seventh round in the 60s out of 10 rounds played this season, and Cave combined to shoot 10-under par to lead the team on day one. Thomas Ponder ended the day with an even par 72, followed by Jonathan Griz (74) and Canon Claycomb (76).

The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be held Friday through Sunday at the par 72, 7,017-yard Golf Club of Georgia – Lakeside Course in Alpharetta, Ga.

Round One Highlights

  • The opening round was delayed one hour due to frost on the course, with starting temperatures between 40-45 degrees
  • As a team, the Tide leads the field in par 3 scoring (E), ranks third in birdies (22) and fourth in par 5 scoring (-8, 4.60)
  • Nick Dunlap’s 65 is a season-best score and matches Canon Claycomb with the lowest round shot by any Alabama player this fall
  • It marks his team-leading seventh round in the 60s out of the Tide’s 10 rounds played
  • Along with topping the field with eight birdies, Dunlap also leads all individuals in par 3 scoring (-2, 2.50)
  • Thomas Ponder is in a tie for 34th entering the second round of play
  • Jonathan Griz ended the day in a tie for 50th while Canon Claycomb is in a tie for 63rd
  • Tyler Lipscomb, who is competing in the event as an individual, is in 75th (82)

The Field

  • Tournament host and No. 13 Georgia Tech shares the clubhouse lead with Clemson after both teams carded a 12-under 276
  • No. 5 Stanford and No. 25 Pepperdine are in a three-way tie for No. 12 Alabama round out the top five, four shots behind the leaders at 8-under 280
  • The 13-team field features seven teams in the nation’s top 20, including six teams from the 2022 NCAA Championship field
