WINDERMERE, Fla. – Amongst a loaded field, the Purdue men’s golf team played well on day one of the Isleworth Collegiate, finishing the first round in fifth out of 15 teams.
The Boilermakers totaled a 3-over par 291 to finish the initial 18 holes in fifth place, just five shots out of second place. Auburn leads the tournament after tallying a 15-under par 273. Florida is second at 2-under par 286, while UCF is third at even-par 288 and LSU is fourth at 2-over par 290.
Purdue is fifth and followed by Arizona and West Virginia at 4-over par 292, South Carolina and California in eighth at 5-over par 293 and Illinois and Minnesota tied for 10th at 6-over par 294.
Purdue recovered after a slow start as its four counting players were 6-over par through five holes. The counting four players played the final 13 holes in a combined 3-under par to move up the leaderboard.
Junior Herman Sekne continued his excellent season, opening the tournament with a 4-under par 68, good for T-5th after the first round. Sekne was 1-over par through six holes, but played his last 12 holes in 5-under par for his opening-round 68.
The 68 tied a season-best, 18-hole score for the junior and was his fourth round in the 60s this season, coming in just 10 rounds played. It marked his 15th career round in the 60s, and 27 of his 61 career rounds have been even- or under-par.
Nels Surtani has positioned himself for another top-20 finish after an opening-round 72, good for 17th place. Surtani was solid all day with three birdies, three bogeys and 12 pars on his round.
Luke Prall overcame a slow start to shoot a 2-over par 74, good for 28th place. Prall bogeyed the first two holes, but played the last 16 holes in even-par, including nine pars on the back nine for his 74.
Nick Dentino is tied for 50th at 5-over par 77 and Peyton Snoeberger is tied for 71st at 9-over par 81.
Purdue will tee off hole No. 1, in Monday’s second round, starting at 8:50 a.m. ET. Purdue will be paired with top-30 teams LSU and Arizona.
