CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Illinois women’s golf team placed tied for eighth at the Hurricane Invitational after carding a 54-hole team total of 870 (+6) at The Biltmore Golf Course.
Crystal Wang finished tied for eighth with a tournament total of 213 (-3). Wang has placed in the Top 10 in four-straight events and dating back to last season, she has earned a Top-15 finish in eight-straight events. The Diamond Bar, Calif., native, had the second-best scoring average on par 4s (3.90, -3), and totaled 13 birdies in the tournament, which was tied for third-most among the field
Isabel Sy recorded her second Top 10 finish of the season, also placing tied for eighth, after posting a final round 74 (+2) to finish the tournament with a 213 (-3). Sy posted a scoring average of 4.50 (-6) on the par 5s, which was tied for the fourth-lowest in the event. The junior also collected 11 birdies, which was tied for the eighth-most.
This is the second time that the Wang and Sy duo have both finished in the Top 10 in an event this season and the third time that they have both finished in the Top 20.
Lexanne Halama fired a final round 76 (+4) to end the tournament tied for 32nd. Siyan Chen shot a third round 74 (+2) to finish tied for 60th and Alise Knudson also finished tied for 60th after her final round 73 (+1). Knudson also picked up an eagle on hole 18 during today’s finale.
Mattie Frick, competing as an individual, shot a final round 76 (+4) to place tied for 29th. Frick posted a score of three-under on par 3s, which was tied for the lowest mark in the Hurricane Invitational. The freshman also tallied 13 total birdies in the event, tied for third-most among the field.
SMU took home the team title, with a 54-hole team total of 848 (-16) and BYU’s Allysha Mae Mateo captured individual honors with a final score of 209 (-7).
The Fighting Illini are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 12, when they head to the Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., to compete in the Therese Hession Regional Challenge, hosted by The Ohio State University.
