WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – The Wake Forest men’s golf team was led by another stellar performance from junior Michael Brennan, who climbed the leaderboard despite the poor weather conditions at the Southwestern Invitational.
Battling strong winds in Westlake Village, Calif., Brennan carded the lowest score on the course to help move into contention for the individual title. The Leesburg, Va. native goes into the final round just three strokes off the lead and tied for second. As a team, the Deacs sit in ninth with a two-round score of 594 (+18).
After posting an opening round 70 (-2), Brennan limited his scorecard to just two bogies on Tuesday. An opening hole bogey was quickly erased with two birdies in the next three holes. For the second consecutive day, he hit the turn at 1-under-par. Like Monday, Brennan closed the round strong, starting with a birdie on No. 12.
Three holes later he posted an eagle followed by a birdie to improve his round to 4-under-par. His 68 (-4) was one of just two rounds in the 60s on the course and one of just nine under-par rounds in the 66-person field.
Sophomore Scotty Kennon will look to claim his second top-25 finish of the season on Wednesday as he sits tied for 22nd at 3-over-par.
In the second round, Wake Forest will be paired with UNLV, San Jose State and USC again with the group set to tee off No. 1 starting at 11:00 a.m. ET.
From Coach Haas:
“It was very windy today. The guys hit the ball nicely and started to figure out the course. We should have a great last day. Always a lot to play for. I am very proud of their effort and they were physically excellent. Just have to keep working on the scoring and will get better each and every week. Go Deacs!” head coach Jerry Haas
