GUADALAJARA, Mexico – The No. 12 Virginia women’s golf team opened play at the Collegiate Invitational at Guadalajara Country Club tied for fifthplace after the opening 27 holes. The Cavaliers were forced to play short-handed when sophomore Megan Propeck could not compete due to illness. That meant that all four competing players had to count their scores and Virginia did not have the luxury of discarding its high score for the round.
UVA shot 11-over 299 in the opening round and stood at 16-over 448 after 27 holes. Georgia leads the 12-team field at 5-over 437, one shot better than Baylor. Florida State is in third place at 9-over 441.
Rebecca Skoler led UVA in the opening round by shooting even-par 72 that included an eagle on the par-5 first hole. Jennifer Cleary shot 74, Amanda Sambach posted a round of 76 and Riley Smyth finished at 77.
After 27 holes, Skoler led UVA at 1-over 109 to be tied for seventh place. Riley Smyth was in 17th place at 4-over 112, Jennifer Cleary was 20th at 5-over 113 and Amanda Sambach was 27th at 6-over 114.
Maline Krause, competing as an individual, shot 84 during the opening round and was 8-over after nine holes in the second round.
