La Sasso Leads Watersound Invitational After One Round


PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – NC State men’s golf freshman Michael La Sasso leads the Watersound Invitational by one shot after one round of play at Shark’s Tooth Golf Club.

As a team, NC State is in fifth place in a loaded field that features nine of the 12 teams ranked 40th or higher in the Golfstat team rankings.

La Sasso fired a seven-under par 65 to hold a one-shot lead over Florida State’s Frederik Kjettrup after 18 holes.

The Raleigh native had a bogey free round as he opened the day from Hole 10 with birdies on three of his first four holes. After making the turn, La Sasso had four more birdies, shooting 32 on the back nine to head into the clubhouse with a seven-under par 65.

The round of 65 is tied for the ninth-lowest individual round in program history.

Brandon Einstein is next for NC State in a tie for 17th at one-under par. Einstein’s day was highlighted by an eagle on 17.

Maximilian Steinlechner and Spencer Oxendine both shot three-over par and are tied for 42nd while Ethan Choi is in a tie for 51st and five-over par.

Top-ranked Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech are tied for first place with both team’s shooting scores of nine-under par. Alabama is in third place, three shots. Tournament-host Florida State is in fourth place, two shots back of the Crimson Tide while the Pack are alone in fifth, two shots back of the Seminoles.

The second round begins Monday morning for NC State at 10 a.m. with the first NC State golfer teeing off from hole 10.
