Bears In Third After Rain, Lightning Delays

Chang, Liu Tied For Second

SACRAMENTO – After rain and lightning delays forced multiple stoppages on day one of the Causeway Invitational at Del Paso Country Club on Monday, the Cal women’s golf team finds itself in third place behind a pair of top-two round one finishes.

With all 11 Bears on the roster in action for the first time, Cal’s A and B lineups were led by senior Tzu-Yi Chang and freshman Adora Liu, respectively. Both Bears finished the opening round tied for second overall with a score of 1-under-71. It was the best score of the season for each of them.

Cal A finished round one third overall at a collective 8-over-296, just four strokes behind first place Washington. The B lineup ended up sixth at 14-over-302.

“When there are delays, it’s really important to warm up. I did a really good job of doing that three different times today,” Chang said. “It’s not easy to do that at all, but that’s where my focus was and I feel like my mind was very patient today.”

Monday was originally scheduled for 36 holes, but after the rain delay took up more than two hours and was followed shortly after by lightning, the 13-team field was able to complete the first round just before the day’s end. The Bears stayed positive and ready through the suspensions and difficult playing conditions.

Four other Bears made the top-30 through 18 holes. Junior Cristina Ochoa tied for 13th at 2-over 74. Just one stroke behind Ochoa and tying for 22nd were junior Mika Jin and senior Jasmine Lew. Graduate student Annika Borrelli carded a 4-over-76 and tied for 30th.

“Tomorrow, the focus is sticking on what’s been working really well and not thinking about the result so much because it changes so quickly,” Chang said. “We don’t know how the weather is going to be, so we need to just be in the present moment and focused.”

Depending on tomorrow’s conditions, the Bears are set for another 8 a.m. shotgun start.
