GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After rainy conditions shortened the first day of the Vystar Credit Union Gators Invitational, inclement weather in Florida forced the event to end after 36 holes on Sunday. The Wildcats moved up to fifth place on Sunday, finishing the tournament with a final score of 18-over par. Senior Gile Bite Starkute carded even par rounds of 70 on both days to finish in a tie for fifth out of a field of 75 players.
“The staple of this week was adversity each day because of weather, and I feel like our team did a great job of overcoming the challenges of the weekend,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “I feel good about our performance this week as we battled the rain and schedule changes. There’s a lot to take away from our weekend moving forward that can help us grow in the future.”
Arizona had three golfers in the top 25 of the individual leaderboard as sophomore Carolina Melgrati finished tied for 13th at 3-over and freshman Julia Misemer shot 5-over par for a tie for 21st.
The Wildcats were at their best on Mark Bostick Golf Course’s shortest holes, finishing in a tie for second in par-3 scoring. Starkute finished tied for first in par-3 scoring by averaging 2.80 strokes with Misemer finishing four places behind her.
No. 16 Arizona Women’s Golf will return to action in three weeks for the ASU/PING Invitational at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix, which begins on Friday, March 24.
