PHOENIX, Ariz.Ā āĀ The No. 22 Mississippi State men’s golf teamĀ and Ruan PretoriusĀ claimedĀ team and individual championships at the Desert Mountain InvitationalĀ on Sunday.Ā The Bulldogs secured their second win of the season and PretoriusĀ notched his first winĀ in the Maroon and White.Ā

“IĀ am obviously very proud of our team for the resilience and determination they showed today,” head coachĀ Dusty Smith said. “ItĀ certainlyĀ wasn’t a perfect round, but the guys did a great job of accepting their shots and moving on from them.Ā I can’t say enough about Ruan and how he played this week. It was great watchingĀ him win the individual title.”
PretoriusĀ secured the individual championshipĀ three strokes ahead of Arkansas-Little Rock’s Matteo Cristoni.Ā He shot a career-low 208Ā and finished at aĀ career-lowĀ 8-under.Ā He registered 16 total birdies for the tournament and went bogey-free on theĀ front nine in the second round and the back nine in the third round.Ā
“It was great having Coach Smith on the bag,” Pretorius said after his win. “Our goal was to keep it out of the desert andĀ value my golf ball on every shot.”

Austin VukovitsĀ made aĀ 13-spot jump in the final round to finish in a five-way tie for seventh.Ā He cardedĀ 11 total birdiesĀ and an eagleĀ with scores of 70 and 72 in the first and third rounds, along with a bogey-free back nine in the final round.Ā
Garrett EndicottĀ andĀ Ford CleggĀ both finished play with top-20 finishes.Ā Endicott tied for 12th withĀ Santa Clara’s Alex Conley andĀ Little Rock’s Archie Smith.Ā HeĀ shot 72Ā and 71Ā in the first two rounds,Ā carding nine birdies total and an eagle.Ā CleggĀ made a 13-spot jumpĀ toĀ endĀ the tournament in aĀ four-way tie for 19thĀ with a tournament-low 72 in the final round. He madeĀ six birdies in the round and 12Ā totalĀ for the tournament.Ā
