Cal Starts Strong, Falls Back At John A. Burns Intercollegiate
LIHU‘E, Hawaii – Sampson Zheng shot a personal collegiate-low 65 in the first round to help the California men’s golf team get off to a strong start before it ultimately fell back into the middle of the pack on the opening day of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Ocean Course at Hokuala.
With inclement weather expected on Kaua’i over the next two days, teams played into the second round on Thursday before competition was halted at 8:15 p.m. PST. The Golden Bears – who shot an impressive first-round 277 (-11) – will resume play on Friday morning in a tie for 12th place after shooting 9-over as a group through the first 10 holes of the second round. Cal was in sole possession of second place behind BYU after the first 18 holes before it struggled down the stretch of Thursday’s play.
Zheng was flawless in the first round, playing bogey-free golf to go along with birdies on holes 2, 6, 7, 10 and 18 as well as an eagle on hole 4. Zheng is at even par through 10 holes in the second round and is currently tied for fifth individually. Simon Kwon, who also eagled hole 4 and is playing as an individual, is next closest to Zheng on the individual leaderboard in a tie for 14th.
