Tar Heel sophomore David Ford followed an opening-round 68 with a 66 in the afternoon to earn a share of lead after 36 holes at the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate Friday at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix.
Ford led second-ranked Carolina to a tie for third place in the team standings with Oklahoma State at 14 under par, nine strokes behind host and fifth-ranked Arizona State and eight behind No. 19 Arizona. The third and final round is Saturday.
Ford is tied for the lead at 8-under 134 with Arizona’s Sam Sommerhauser, ASU’s Preston Summerhays and Baylor’s Johnny Keefer. Ford birdies five of the first six holes in the second round and was bogey-free until the 18th hole.
Dylan Menante (70-70) and Austin Greaser (69-71) are tied for 18th. Ryan Burnett (73-70) is tied for 39th and Peter Fountain (70-75) is tied for 48th.
