Bears Finish Strong At Western Intercollegiate

Cal Places Third Behind Top-Six Individual Efforts From Zheng, Du

SANTA CRUZ – The California men’s golf team shot a 4-under par 354 for the Western Intercollegiate field’s lowest third-round score and secured a third-place finish on Wednesday at Pasatiempo Golf Club. It was the Golden Bears’ fourth top-five finish in five spring tournaments played as they bested six teams ranked among the top 44 nationally.
 
Cal finished at even par for the tournament, jumping one spot on the leaderboard Wednesday after falling back to fourth place in round two. The Bears led the field after 18 holes played in Santa Cruz following a first-round 334.
 
Juniors Sampson Zheng (-4) and Aaron Du (-2) – who tied a Western Intercollegiate low 18-hole score with a first-round 63 on Monday – led the Bears with individual finishes of fifth and a tie for sixth. Zheng moved to 6-under with three front-nine birdies before a pair of bogeys on holes 13 and 18 pushed him back to fifth place.
 
Simon Kwon ended the Western Intercollegiate on a high note, shooting a 1-under 69 on Wednesday. Freshmen Nathan Wang (+4) and Daniel Heo (+5) earned top-30 finishes.
