Graduate Student Records Lowest Score Of Season
PHOENIX – Graduate student Annika Borrelli shot par or better for the third straight day at the Pac-12 Championships, leading the California women’s golf team to a sixth place finish at Papago Golf Course.
The Golden Bears ended the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a team score of 12-over 876 (288-293-295), three shots ahead of seventh place Oregon State.
“We’re in a good place and I think a lot of really good things came out of this,” Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel said. “We’re close and I think everyone feels it. We have a hunger to get back at it and keep improving. It’ll be good and motivating to start practice next week, get organized around regionals, make a plan around that and really get after it once we find out where we’re playing.”
Borrelli finished her first-ever Pac-12 Championships at 3-under par, tied for seventh place individually. It was her highest individual finish as a Bear and third top-10 placing of the year.
In the Bears’ most important competition yet this season, Borrelli (71-70-72 – 213) stepped up in a big way with her best score at Cal. After alternating birdies and bogeys on holes five through eight, she remained even on the day until another birdie on hole 14.
Adora Liu followed a strong day two performance and came up huge for the Bears once again. The freshman carded an even-par 72 that was tied with Borrelli for 11th individually on the day. Over her 36-hole conference championship debut, Liu shot 1-over par.
“It’s always good to have someone step it up and we’ve had different people do so,” McDaniel said. “This week it was Annika. She’s been there for us a few times this spring. Adora playing the way she did and coming in and proving herself as a freshman was huge.”
Also contributing to the Bears’ team score were junior Cristina Ochoa (70-76-75 – 221), who finished in a tie for 28th, and freshman Olivia Lee (75-74-76 – 225), who tied for 34th.
In the team standings, USC (-15) pulled away to win the Pac-12 Championship easily ahead of second-place Oregon (-8) and third-place Stanford (-7). Rose Zhang (67-68-69 – 204) won the individual conference title after shooting at least 3-under par all three days of the tournament.
