PITTSBURGH, PA – This weekend, the Maryland women’s golf team will return to Pittsburgh, Pa., for the second year to play in the 41st Big Ten Women’s Championship at Fox Chapel Golf Club, the same site from a year ago. This is the team’s 10th and final 2022-23 regular season event.
The tournament will consist of 54 holes of play (18 holes Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). The first and second rounds will begin at 8:30, and the final round will begin at 8:00 am. Players will tee off in a tee-time format. The field will play from 6,045 yards. Fans can follow the live scoring here.
The tournament format will differ slightly from its usual setup “play five, count four” format; this week’s stroke play championship will be “play six, count four”.
No. 30th-ranked junior Patricie Mackova, senior Angela Garvin, freshman Nicha Kanpai, ranked 72nd nationally, sophomore Panassaya Somchit, senior Maria Vittoria Corbi, and junior Karla Elena Vazquez Setzer will tee it up this weekend for the Terrapins.
Maryland enters this weekend as the 33th-ranked team in the nation, with Mackova and Kanpai, respectively, sitting in 3rd and 7th in the Big Ten Conference.
Participants in the championship include No. 59 Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, No. 43 Michigan, No. 32 Michigan State, No. 56 Minnesota, No. 55 Nebraska, No. 15 Northwestern, No. 24 Ohio State, No. 67 Penn State, No.45 Purdue, Rutgers, and No. 82 Wisconsin.
Rankings are based on team standings via Golfstat as of April 16th, 2023.
Over the three-day tournament (April 21-23), Maryland will play the par-71 layout designed by the late Seth Raynor and Charles Banks and restored in 2001 by Brian Sliva. The club has hosted the 2002 Curtis Club, most recently the Senior Players in 2014, and multiple high-level amateur events, including the 2022 Big Ten Women’s Golf Championship.
Last season at Fox Chapel, the Terps finished 6th out of 14 teams overall. Corbi placed in solo 5th, Mackova placed in a tie for 6th, Somchit in a tie for 14th, Vazquez Setzer in a tie for 64th, and Garvin in a tie for 68th.
Both Maria Vittoria Corbi and Patricie Mackova were named the All-Championship team.
Delayed coverage of this year’s tournament will be provided by Big Ten Network and the FOX Sports app (exact dates/times TBD).
