PINEHURST, N.C. (theACC.com) – Georgia Tech held the slight upper hand on Friday following the first 36 holes of the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the Country Club of North Carolina.
Hiroshi Tai’s two-round 5-under score of 139 led a balanced scoring effort for the Yellow Jackets, who finished the day at 13-under par (563), two shots ahead of defending champion Wake Forest.
Stroke play is scheduled to conclude with a final 18 holes Saturday on the Dogwood Course, and action is now scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. (90 minutes earlier than originally set) due to the threat of inclement weather.
Spectators are allowed at the ACC Men’s Golf Championship and it is not a ticketed event. Parking will be available just outside of the main gate, with a shuttle service to the clubhouse.
The top four teams from stroke play will advance to Sunday’s match play semifinals. Florida State held third place at 4-under par 572 following Friday’s first two rounds, followed by Duke (-3), Virginia (even par), Louisville (+1) and top-seeded North Carolina (+2).
Wake Forest’s Michael Brennan sits at 9-under par and holds the individual lead at 135 following opening rounds of 66 and 69. Louisville’s Jiri Zuska finished at 6-under and is three shots back at 138 (70-68), while Georgia Tech’s Tai (5-under) holds third place.
Virginia’s Ben James and Louisville’s Max Kennedy (both 4-under) round out the top five. Georgia Tech’s Ross Steelman holds sixth place at 3-under.
The leader following the conclusion of 54 holes of stroke play will be recognized as the ACC individual champion.
The ACC Championship field boasts six of the top 30 teams in the country in the latest Golfstat rankings, including No. 2 North Carolina, No. 6 Florida State, No. 12 Georgia Tech, No. 16 Virginia, No. 27 Louisville and No. 28 Wake Forest.
The semifinals and finals of the ACC Men’s Golf Championship match play will be televised live on ACC Network Extra from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Ryan Burr (play-by-play) and Steve Scott (analyst) will provide the call. A championship recap show will air May 1 at 9 p.m. on ACCN.
