Men’s Golf Finishes in Ninth Place at Big Ten Championships


East Lansing, Mich. – After more than three inches of rain from Saturday night into Sunday and more rain expected during the day, the Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships were canceled during the third round with Michigan State finishing in ninth place among 14 teams.

The tournament was played on the par-71, 7,111-yard course at Galloway National Golf Club in New Jersey, just outside of Atlantic City.

The Spartans shot a 26-over par 310 in the first round and finished with a two-round score of 30-over par 598.

Illinois, ranked No. 3 in the country by Golfstat, fired a 16-under par 268 on Saturday and topped the field with a 36-hole score of 8-under par 560. Northwestern finished in second place at 9-over par 577, with Wisconsin in third place (15-over par 583), Indiana in fourth (18-over par 586) and Ohio State and Iowa tied for fifth place (21-over par 589).

Junior August Meekhof and sophomore Ashton McCulloch were the top finishers for Michigan State, tying for 23rd place at 6-over par 148.

Meekhof had the best round of the day on Saturday for the Spartans with a 1-under par 70, finishing the day with two birdies and 15 pars.  Meekhof went 78-70 for his score, while McCulloch had rounds of 77-71.

Senior Drew Hackett shot a 2-over par 73 on Saturday and finished tied for 31st place at 8-over par 150 (77-73).

Senior Bradley Smithson and fifth year Troy Taylor II both finished the second round with scores of 3-over par 74 on Saturday. Smithson tied for 41st place at 10-over par 152 (78-74), while Taylor II tied for 46th place at 12-over par 154 (80-74).

Michigan State awaits the announcements of the NCAA Regionals on Wednesday, May 3 at 1 p.m. (The Golf Channel).
