It was a challenging second round for the entire field at the NCAA Morgan Hill (Calif.) Regional at the Institute G.C., and USC sophomore Jackson Rivera and freshman Mahanth Chirravuri battled through it on Tuesday (May 16), leaving themselves some work to do heading into the final round.
Chirravuri is now tied for 33rd at 5-over 149 (70-79) while Rivera is tied for 40th at 6-over 150 (70-80). There were only five rounds under par in the 75-man field and only another five at par.
The Trojan duo, each with an eye on advancing to the 2023 NCAA Championships, set for May 26-31 at Grayhawk G.C. in Scottsdale, Ariz., face an uphill battle.
Only the top finisher on a team not advancing to nationals will get the berth to NCAAs. As the leaderboard sits after 36 holes, that puts Chirravuri and Rivera nine and 10 holes back, respectively.
But as the top five teams potentially shift during the final round, so will the situation for the individual berth.
Still, Rivera and Chirravuri will need to find their groove Wednesday to give themselves a chance.
They will be paired together for the second straight round and are set to tee off at 9:42 a.m. PT.
