East Lansing, Mich. – When she walked off the ninth green at Grayhawk Golf Club on Sunday evening, Michigan State sophomore women’s golfer Katie Lu felt more disappointed in that she knew the Spartans had not made the cut as a team and would not play in the final round of the NCAA Championships in Scottsdale, Ariz.
After exchanging hugs with her teammates, MSU Head Coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll spoke to Lu with a smile and let her know that she was going to advance to play as an individual in Monday’s final round.
Lu led the Spartans, who tied for 18th place among 30 teams and missed the cut by four shots, from start to finish, tying for 30th place individual at 1-over par 217 (72-72-73).
In addition to the top 15 teams that made the cut playing a final 18 holes, the top nine individuals were selected to play for the individual title.
Lu finished Monday’s round with a 2-over par 74 and tied for 41st place overall at 3-over par 291 (72-72-73-74). She had an active day on Monday, posting five birdies, three bogies, two double bogies and parring eight holes.
For the tournament, she finished 11th in the field with 49 pars across four rounds, with average scores of 3.06 on par-3’s, 4.08 on par-4’s and a 4.94 average on par-5 holes.
“I’m really proud of Katie,” Slobodnik-Stoll said after the round. “To make it as an individual to the top nine and her opportunity to play for a national championship individually tomorrow is pretty cool. That’s the first time that’s ever happened, so history made.”
The Spartans reached the NCAA Championships for the 15th time in program history and the 13th time under the direction of Slobodnick-Stoll. After a regular season that saw the team finish among the top-five teams four times, the Spartans won the NCAA Palm Beach Regional, the first regional win in program history.
