SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – A strong start to the second round for Duke was rebuffed by the difficulty of the Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club, as the Blue Devils finished at 20-over, 300, on Saturday afternoon. Junior Ian Siebers finished his round at 1-over, 71, to lead Duke’s efforts in the second round.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke started on No. 10 on Saturday afternoon and ended the day at 20-over, 300.
- Duke played its first nine holes at 1-over but went 19-over through the final nine holes with the course evolving in difficulty as the afternoon wore on.
- The Blue Devils are currently in 26th place heading into the third round on Sunday. A 54-hole cut is made at the end of the third round, with the top-15 teams advancing to Monday’s fourth round of stroke play.
- Ian Siebers got under-par with a birdie on No. 12 and finished his opening nine holes still at 1-under after six consecutive pars prior to making the turn. After playing the first three holes of the front nine at 3-over, the junior bounced back with a birdie on the par-4 fourth. Another dropped shot on No. 6 was offset by a birdie on No. 7, which played as the hardest hole on the course on Saturday. Siebers was the low Blue Devil for the day with his 1-over, 71.
- It was a steady start to the day for Kelly Chinn, as the sophomore rolled in 11 consecutive pars to begin his second round. The Great Falls, Va., native finished his day with a total of 15 pars, but played his final seven holes at 5-over en route to a second-round score of 5-over, 75.
- Two Blue Devils signed for a 7-over, 77, on Saturday afternoon. Luke Sample made the turn at 1-over after scattering two bogeys through his first nine holes and rolling in a birdie on No. 14. The junior bounced back from a triple-bogey early on the front nine with a birdie on No. 2, before playing his final seven holes at 4-over. William Love also made the turn at 1-over after making eight pars along with one bogey through his opening nine holes of the day. Love sat at 2-over walking off of No. 4, but the freshman struggled to find a rhythm to end his round and went 5-over over his last five holes.
- Also for Duke, Ethan Evans carded a 10-over, 80, on Saturday.
