Stanford Takes Eighth, Falls in Playoff

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The 2023 NCAA Championships came to a close on Monday for Stanford men’s golf, with the team finishing in a tie for eighth overall before falling in a playoff to Arizona State.

Barclay Brown finished fourth overall, shooting a one-under 69 to end the event five under par. Brown added three birdies on the afternoon to bring his tournament total to 17, which ranked sixth overall.

Three Stanford players finished at one-over par with 71 strokes: Ethan Ng, Michael Thorbjornsen and Nate Menon. Karl Vilips shot a two-over par 72 to round out the Cardinal scoring. Ng, Thorbjornsen and Vilips tallied three birdies each while Menon recorded two.

The Cardinal sank a series of putts down the stretch to force a playoff for the eighth seed through 72 holes, with Arizona State joining Stanford at plus-12. Vilips and Thorbjornsen notched birdies in the first playoff hole, the latter chipping in from a few yards off the green, but the teams were tied at even par and needed a second playoff round. Stanford again totaled an even par score, but the Sun Devils ended one under par to clinch the result.
