Li Wins the AJGA Polo Golf Junior Classic

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Duke women’s golf incoming freshman Katie Li collected her fifth career American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) victory Friday as she claimed the Polo Golf Junior Classic title with a 6&4 match play victory over Nikki Oh at the Bethpage State Park Black Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.

In the championship match, Li won the first hole with a par, but dropped the second with a bogey.  With a birdie on the par-5 fourth hole, Oh took a 1UP lead.  Li faced her first deficit over the last three matches, but it didn’t faze her.  A native of Basking Ridge, N.J., Li went on to win the next five holes to take a 4UP lead through nine holes.  This included birding holes six, seven and eight.  Li made the turn with a 2-under, 34.

On the back nine, Li dropped hole No. 11, but won holes 12-14 to close the match.

Li was impressive all week en route to her title.  In the quarterfinals, she registered a 4&3 win over Michelle Woo in a match she never trailed.  Li was dominant against Kylie Chong in the semifinals winning eight of the first 11 holes to claim an 8&7 victory.

In pool play, Li opened with a convincing, 5&3, win over Madison Moman, but dropped her next match against Maye Huang.  Li needed to win her final pool play contest against Jude Lee in order to advance.  Two key birdies on the back nine helped Li build a lead and she eventually moved on with a 3&2 win.
