TRUCKEE, Calif. — University of Colorado golf alumnus Steve Ivan put on an impressive rally to win his opening match here Monday in the 68th Annual U.S. Senior Amateur.
Ivan, seeded 51st, won his first match against No. 14 seed Brad Wayment on the 19th hole after being down by two through 16 holes on the 7,251-yard, par-72 Martis Camp Club course. He started his rally on the par-3, 204-yard 17th hole by making par while Wayment bogeyed, and then tied things up in the same fashion, parring the par-4, 468-yard 18th hole with Wayment scoring another bogey.
For the first and as it turned out only extra hole, they returned to play the par-4, 403-yard 1st. And once again, Ivan made par while Wayment bogeyed, enabling Ivan advance to Tuesday morning’s round of 32. It was the only match out of 32 on Monday that went into sudden death, and both even carded identical 3-over 75s in the process.
Ivan actually got the jump on Wayment, birdying Nos. 1 and 3 to go 2-up early, but Wayment won the next two holes to tie things up through five. After they tied on Nos. 6 and 7, Wayment scored pars on Nos. 8 and 9 while Ivan bogeyed, and the Mesa, Arizonian was 2 up at the turn. He then led by either one or two holes through 16 when Ivan mounted his comeback.
Ivan, who played for the Buffaloes from 1981-84, qualified for match play after tying for 45th in the stroke play portion with a 75-78—153 performance (9-over par), as the top 64 advanced into match play.
Ivan, who resides in Colorado Springs, will face 19th-seeded Jody Fanagan of Ireland in the Round of 32 beginning at 10:25 a.m. MDT. Fanagan defeated Chris Hartenstein of Austin, Texas, 2 up in his first round match. He qualified for match play with the same score as Wayment, a 5-over 75-74—149. The winner will advance into the round of 16 Tuesday afternoon.
The remaining schedule calls for the quarterfinals and semifinals Wednesday and the 18-hole championship match on Thursday.
