Maxwell Ford Eagles First, Leads UNC At Olympia Fields


Maxwell Ford eagled his first hole as a Tar Heel and led the University of North Carolina with a 3-under-par 67 to highlight day one of the men’s college golf season in the opening round of the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational Friday at the Olympia Fields Country Club North Course.
 
The Tar Heels are in third place in the 15-team field after shooting 1-over 281. Texas is first at 4-under 276 and Georgia Tech is a stroke back of the Longhorns.
 
Florida State is fourth at 3 over and Arizona State and the host Illini are fifth at 5 over.
 
Ford hit driver-three wood to the front edge of the green and made a 30-foot eagle putt on his first hole of the season and first since transferring to UNC after two seasons at Georgia. He was even par at the turn, then made birdies on the 12th, 13th and 15th holes to shoot 3-under 32 on the inward nine. He is in fifth place, three behind Georgia Tech’s Cristo Lamprecht and Stanford’s Karl Vilips.
 
Dylan Menante parred all 18 holes and is tied for 15th at even, Kenan Poole shot 1 over, David Ford shot 73 and Austin Greaser began with a 75.
 
Round two is Saturday and the tournament concludes Sunday.
