OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Shooting 2-over as a team in Saturday’s second round of the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational, No. 19 Arizona Men’s Golf posted a four-stroke improvement to move into a tie for seventh place. Senior Sam Sommerhauser led the Wildcats in the second round, shooting a 1-under round of 69. He nearly hit a hole in one on the 16th hole but settled for a tap in birdie. It was one of five birdies Sommerhauser sank on the back nine.
“We wanted to come out and post better scores today, which was a testament to our team’s maturity,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “We were at our best today after the turn, and Sam played some great golf to set the tone for us on the back nine. I believe we will ride that momentum into tomorrow’s final round. The gameplan is to continue to tweak and improve and see if we can shoot even lower as a team tomorrow.”
Sommerhauser’s round of 69 on Saturday was his lowest of the young season and mirrors his second round in this event last season, which also saw him shoot 1-under. He sits in a tie for 21st place for the event at 1-over, matching Arizona’s low scorer yesterday, Filip Jakubcik, for top Wildcat on the leaderboard. Juniors Tiger Christensen and Johnny Walker sit two strokes behind Jakubcik and Sommerhauser to give Arizona four players in the top 30.
The Cats will enter Sunday’s finale tied with Baylor at 8-over par. They sit two strokes behind Florida State and seven strokes behind fifth-place Alabama. North Carolina took the team lead on Saturday courtesy of an 11-under round to put the Tar Heels at 10-under for the tournament.
Arizona is set for a 6 a.m. (MST) tee time for the final round on Sunday, playing alongside Baylor and Florida.
