Chang, Along With Freshmen Lin & Smith, Lead UW On Day One At Chambers

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Led by its two freshmen, the Washington women’s golf team opened the 2023-24 season Monday at the Leadership and Golf Invitational at Chambers Bay, finishing the 36-hole day with a team score of 593.
 
All nine members of the 2023-24 roster teed off in the season-opener, including four playing as individuals. Through two rounds, the Huskies stand eighth in the 19-team field. The third and final round gets underway Tuesday morning.
 
Freshman Vivian Lu finished the two rounds with the low score among UW golfers in the team competition, turning in back-to-back 73s, for a two-round total of 2-over 146. Her scorecard included four birdies and four bogies in the first round and three of each in the second. She’s tied for 22nd in the 108-woman field after the first day.
 
Classmate Mads Smith, also making her collegiate debut, led the way for the Huskies in the opening round, carding a 2-under 70 at Chambers, site of the men’s 2015 U.S. Open. Her first-round scorecard included five birdies, a bogey and a double. She carded a second-round 78, giving her a two-round score of 4-over 146, second among the Husky starters and tied for 27th
 
Camille Boyd finished the day one stroke back of Smith, with a 76-73-149, while Jamie Hsieh finished with scores of 74-76-150, 6-over through two rounds.
 
Jenny Chang, playing as an individual, had the lowest two-round total of the nine Huskies. She finished 1-over in the first round and 1-under in the second, for an even-par 144 for the day, placing her in a tie for 16th overall.
 
Sophomore Carmen Lin also had a solid day playing as an individual, with scores of 72-77-149, 5-over par for the tournament and tied for 35th.
