Washington Builds Big Lead On Day One Of Husky Invitational

BREMERTON, Wash. – Washington got off to a hot before putting some distance between itself and the field after 36 holes at the Husky Invitational at Gold Mountain Golf Club’s Olympic Course on Monday, sitting 12 strokes clear of the rest of the field at the top of the leaderboard.
 
While the Huskies finished both rounds Monday, play at the Husky Invitational was suspended before the conclusion of the second round due to darkness, with California, Nevada and Seattle U having players yet to complete their second round.
 
The Dawgs boast five golfers inside the top-eight, led by senior Taehoon Song, who leads the pack at eight-under par. Petr Hruby, who carded just one bogey on the day, is in a tie for second at six-under, while Bo Peng, Finn Koelle and individual Drew Warford are all tied for eighth at three-under.
 
“We’ve got four seniors in the lineup and it kind of showed today,” head coach Alan Murray said. “They had their little blips in rounds but in general they understand the ebb and flow of a round and they’re able to keep putting one foot in front of the next one and keep moving forward.”
 
After a solid front nine of the opening round, the Huskies did damage on the back nine. UW carded 20 birdies on holes 9-18. Leading the charge was Song, who rattled off five birdies in a row en route to a career-low round.
 
“Obviously (Taehoon) played really well,” Murray said. “He putted well. I don’t think you can putt poorly when you shoot nine under. I was really happy for him. He played really well in this tournament last year… I think the competition amongst the guys really helped him so that was fantastic.”
 
Behind a seven-under back nine, the South Korea native fired a nine-under 63 in a bogey-free round.
 
All five from the Husky lineup were under par, with Peng carding a four-under 68 and Hruby coming in one stroke above with a 69.
 
In the second round, it was Hruby who spearheaded the Husky effort. The Czech Republic native logged four birdies, all on the back nine, for a three-under 69. Meanwhile, freshman Koelle built on a solid first round with a two-under second.
 
While not counting in the U Dub lineup, Warford fired a 69 of his own in round two to finish three-under for the day.
