UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Freshman Vivian Lu finished in a tie for 10th place with a three-round total of even-par 216, leading the Washington women’s golf team to a seventh-place finish at the Leadership and Golf Invitational at Chambers Bay.
Lu shot a 2-under 70 on the final day of competition at the Huskies’ season-opener. Her final round scorecard included six birdies on the challenging Chambers Bay course. She had carded 1-over 73s in each of the first two rounds on Monday.
Washington finished the tournament with a three-round total of 17-over 881. In today’s final round, the Huskies were even as a team, with a score of 288, third-lowest of the day.
“It was a solid day today, especially after an incredibly long day yesterday,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “Our two freshmen played very solid golf. I was excited to see Vivian play so well in her first event. Lots of positives to take away from this week.”
After Lu, the next lowest Husky was senior Camille Boyd who finished in a tie for 20th place in the 108-woman field with a 3-over 219. Like Lu, she carded a 2-under 70 in the third round, also notching six birdies.
Playing as an individual, UW’s Jenny Chang finished in a tie for 33rd place at 6-over for the tournament, while freshman Mads Smith tied for 44th place with a 9-over 225. Smith’s low round was a 2-under 70 in round one.
Next up for the UW women is the Blessings Collegiate Invitational, a men’s and women’s event (the UW men will compete there as well) in Fayetteville, Ark., Oct. 2-4.
