Cougars Move Up Four Spots to Finish Sixth at Husky Invitational


BREMERTON, Wash. – Washington State Men’s Golf fired a 9-under, 279, the third-lowest round of the day, as it finished tied for sixth following the final round of the 2023 Husky Invitational Tuesday, played at the par-72, 7,115-yard Gold Mountain Olympic Course.
 
The Cougars, which started the day in 10th place, jumped four spots after shooting their best round of the tournament to finish at 3-under, 861. Host Washington (-40) captured the title, followed by Oklahoma (-14), California (-12) and Oregon State (-12).
 
“I’m proud of the fight the guys showed and we had a solid finish,” said WSU Head Coach Dustin White. “I felt like we played better than our scores showed the first 36 holes, so it was good to see them get more out of their rounds today. The golf course was pretty demanding so I think this will prepare us for the rest of our fall schedule.
 
“Some really good rounds and a lot of good shots to store in the memory bank,” White continued. “It will be nice to have a small break before our next tournament. We can celebrate the good stuff and get to work on a few things that can help get us back in contention.”
 
Sophomore Sam Renner led the Cougars Tuesday as he shot a 5-under, 67, his second round of 67 in the three-round tournament. Renner fired six birdies against one bogey en route to a two-day score of 3-under, 213, tied for 11th overall. Renner was one of three Cougars to finish the round under par.
 
Senior Preston Bebich had two birdies and two bogeys on his way to an even-par 72 Tuesday, giving his a three-round total of -2, 214, tied for 14th. Fifth-year senior Pono Yanagi had his best round of the tournament Tuesday as he shot a 3-under, 69, a round that included six birdies. Yanagi finished his 54-hole event at 2-over, 218, tied for 36th.
 
Senior Nate Plaster had his best round of the tournament as he shot a 1-under, 71, including four birdies on the back nine. Plaster finished his three rounds at +9, 225, tied for 64th. Redshirt-freshman Ben Borgida finished his final round with a 5-over, 77, giving him a two-day total of +8, 224, alone in 63rd place.
 
Four other Cougars competed at the Husky Individual event on the Cascade Course, which is a par-72 playing at par-72, 7,055 yards. Junior Franklin Lydra led WSU’s individuals with a three-round score of 5-under, 211, following a 1-under 71 Tuesday. Senior
