SUSTAINABILITY AT THE SOLHEIM CUP

SUSTAINABILITY AT THE SOLHEIM CUP

As the 12 best European players from the Ladies European Tour (LET) play against the 12 best U.S. players from the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) in the 18th Solheim Cup at Finca Cortesin in Spain this week, the global sporting event is showcasing sustainability in action.

This edition aims to be environmentally friendly and to set the path for the future of the competition. To achieve this aim, the starting point was the setting: Finca Cortesín, a resort that since its opening in 2006 has stood out for its sustainable management – use of 100% recycled water, a “Bermuda” grass variety that reduces water consumption by 30%, creation of bee hives, support for the local community… – has recently received the ACOSOL seal of quality as well as the recognised GEO Certified® label.

Organisations committed to the environment have found in this edition the possibility to contribute to create a more sustainable event thanks to the “sustainability partner” category. In addition, the event’s fleet of vehicles is more efficient thanks to the collaboration of BMW Automotor Premium, Official Dealer of the Bavarian brand in the province of Malaga, which provides a large number of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Using local companies to respond to the different needs of the event, as well as efficient waste management, together with the social work through the NGO Ángeles de la Noche, will result in the efficiency of the tournament and social and economic sustainability.

From the point of view of the attendees, the public will have the opportunity to calculate their carbon footprint through the Zero Footprint action established by Costa del Sol, as well as to create with their own hands, thanks to the collaboration of PING, some super-seeds of different varieties of native trees that after the event will be planted in the Finca La Almoraima, and that, without a doubt, will constitute the most memorable environmental legacy of the event.

The LET is committed to recognising and…
