JACKSON, Miss. – Former Mississippi State golfers Ford Clegg and Chad Ramey competed at the Sanderson Farms Championship on the PGA Tour over the weekend. Clegg made the cut in his PGA Tour debut, and Ramey finished among the top 20.
A blistering second round propelled Clegg into the weekend. The Birmingham, Alabama, native shot a 7-under 65 with eight birdies, including four on the back nine. After shooting even par in his opening round, the Friday 65 pushed Clegg into the top 30 in the field and safely above the cut line of 5-under.
“It’s a dream come true,” Clegg said after the round. “I got the call last Friday and was super pumped, but I also wanted to make the most of my opportunity. No one wants to play their first start and miss the cut. After shooting even and bogeying the last hole, I was a little down last night, but we had a good family dinner and I just told myself to come out tomorrow and give it all you’ve got.”
Ramey was 6-under at the cut, but he fired a 5-under third round on Saturday that put him in the mix. However, on Sunday he managed to shoot just 1-under and finished tied for 16th. Clegg was over par in both of his final two rounds. Making the cut earned him $15,580.
“I know I can compete out here. It’s reassuring for sure,” Clegg said. “I’ve played well. I’ve played with a lot of the top players in college that have done well on PGA Tour U. I’ve seen them come win and make cuts this summer. I know I’m close. They might do it more consistently than I am, but I know that I can compete with them. It’s very reassuring and gives me a lot of confidence going forward.”
