STOCKTON, Calif. – After a torrid start that saw Washington State get to 10 under through seven holes of play, the Cougars finished the round at 6-under, 282, during the second day of play at the 2023 Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational Tuesday on the par-72, 7,278-yard Reserve at Spanos Park course.
WSU, which held the lead midway through the round, finished just off the pace in fourth place at 16-under, 560, seven shots behind co-leaders Loyola Marymount and Grand Canyon.
For the second-straight round, senior Preston Bebich led WSU as he and senior Drayton Joseph each completed their rounds at 2-under, 70. Bebich was cruising after making the turn at 3-under. A birdie at 16 was followed by a double at 17 as he ended his day tied for sixth overall at 7-under, 137. Joseph was equally impressive Tuesday, shooting 2-under on the front and after his lone bogey on 13, got a stroke back with a birdie on 16 to finish his first 36 holes at 2-over, 146 and tied for 46th.
Sophomore Sam Renner was off to a blazing start with birdies on four of his first six holes before a bogey at the 8th resulted in a 3-under front nine. He got it to four under after 11 before a bogey at 12 and double at 17 ended his round a 1-under, 71. Renner, who posted a 5-under, 67, Monday, sits tied for 9th at 6-under, 138.
Fifth-year senior Pono Yanagi mixed in four birdies and three bogeys on his round to end the day at 1-under, 71. Yanagi has a two-day total of 3-under, 141, tied for 23rd. Senior Jaden Cantafio rebounded from a slow start on the front side to finish the back with two birdies, giving him a second-round score of 3-over, 75. Cantafio sits tied for 65th at 5-over, 149.
Nate Plaster, playing as an individual at the Pacific Invitational, signed an incorrect scorecard Tuesday and was disqualified from the round. He will compete Wednesday.
Play at the 2023 Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational concludes Wednesday with a final 18 holes. WSU is scheduled to tee off at 8:24 a.m. PT.
