Men’s Golf Competing in Match Play at Infamous Pebble Beach

The Sun Devil Men’s Golf squad rounds out the fall season at the Cypress Point Classic Monday-Tuesday (Oct. 30-31) at Cypress Point Club in Monte Forest, CA. A 6,536 yard course with a par of 72, the 95-year-old course provides timeless views for the match play style next week. 

THE LINEUP

Preston Summerhays, Josele Ballester, Luke Potter, Ryggs Johnston, and Michael Mjaaseth are the starting five for the Sun Devils with Nick Prieto joining the usual five after solid outing recently.

TEAMS COMPETING

The Sun Devils are ranked fourth in the Oct. 27 Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll, and will be competing against Stanford, Auburn (third), Texas (11th), Tennessee (sixth), Pepperdine, Georgie Tech (fifth), and Illinois (18th). 

TOURNAMENT STYLE

With a match play tournament, each team will compete with six players over the course of 54 holes.The eight teams competing will be pre-seeded #1 through #8 in order by ranking prior to the event. #1 seed will play #8 seed, etc. in the first round of bracketed play. Winners will go forward in the bracket and the losers will move to the consolation bracket.

COURSE HISTORY

Cypress Point Club is a private golf club located in Pebble Beach, California, at the northern end of the Central Coast. Its single 18-hole course has been named as one of the finest in golf, best known for a series of dramatic holes along the Pacific Ocean. The course was designed in 1928 by golf course designer Alister MacKenzie, collaborating with fellow golf course architect Robert Hunter.

SPLENDID SUMMERHAYS

At the Williams Cup on Oct. 9-10, Summerhays finished inside the top-15 for the third time this season with a score of 3-over, 219 (69-76-74). According to the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Summerhays is ranked 12th in the world. 

PASSIONATE POTTER

During the last tournament play, Potter was able to solidify his place inside the top-15 for the 7th time in his collegiate career. Ranked 52nd overall according to the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Potter consistently proves himself at tournaments by providing a steady score and a confident swing. 

MOTIVATED MJAASETH

Just returning home for the World Amateur, Mjaaseth placed in the top 10 for the tournament. Mjaaseth posted the all-time Sun Devil freshman best stroke average of 70.72 and was Golfstat’s 5th ranked freshman.
