LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men’s golf team closes its Fall 2023 season at The Cal Poly Invitational at The Preserve Golf Club in Carmel, Calif., beginning Monday, Oct. 30.
The two-day, 54-hole stroke play event runs through Tuesday, Oct. 31. Live scoring is available at this link. The field features 15 teams.
UCLA Lineup: Omar Morales, Luke Powell, Pablo Ereño, Mason Greene and Luciano Conlan.
The Field: Cal Poly (course host), California, Colorado State, Duke (22), Jacksonville, Northwestern, Ohio State (25), Oregon (24), Oregon State, SMU, Toledo, USC, UCLA, San Diego and San Francisco.
Weather Report: Sunny skies with temperatures in the high 60s.
Par and Yardage: Par 72, 7,041 yards.
Last Time Out
Morales claimed the second medal of his collegiate career at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 15. Morales won with a score of 11-under (68-68-69) in a field of 75 golfers. He recorded just one bogey in each of his final two rounds. Morales’ performance earned him Pac-12 Men’s Golfer of the Week honors.
Morales is the third Bruin to medal at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate, joining Eddy Lai (2019) and Erik Flores (2009).
As a team, the Bruins finished 11th out of 15 teams at even par (288-293-283).
Back-to-Back Medals
Morales’ victory marked UCLA’s second medal in back-to-back events with freshman Luke Powell winning his first medal at the Hamptons Intercollegiate on Oct. 3. Powell won the Hamptons Intercollegiate with a score of 17-under (64-67-68) which is the second lowest score in relation to par in program history.
This marks the first time since the 2018-2019 season that UCLA has won an individual medal in back-to-back events (Hidetoshi Yoshihara and Cole Madey). The Bruins last won two individual medals in the fall portion of their schedule in the 2012-2013 season (Jonathan Garrick and Pontus Widegren).
Freshman Phenom
Powell has had a dominant start to his UCLA career with two top-3 finishes in his first two tournaments. The Laguna Niguel, Calif. native shot six consecutive under par rounds to begin the season, including five in the 60s. He leads the Bruins with a 67.5 scoring…
