Blue Devils Finish Fifth at Cal Poly Invitational

CARMEL, Calif. – The Duke men’s golf team secured another top-five finish on Tuesday afternoon, finishing at 9-under, 855, at the Cal Poly Invitational, held at The Preserve. The Blue Devils concluded the fall portion of their schedule having finished in the top-five in each of the team’s events.

HOW IT HAPPENED: DAY TWO

• The second round was completed on Tuesday morning, with Duke finishing at 2-under, 286, for the second round. In the third round, the Blue Devils shot 5-under, 281, as a team.
• Luke Sample restarted his second round on the 17th hole, his ninth hole of the round, and immediately made birdie. The junior then played his remaining eight holes without a bogey, while adding birdies on the par-3 second and par-4 seventh to sign for a 3-under, 69, in the second round. Sample continued his steady play in the third round, rolling in three birdies on holes Nos. 12, 17 and 2 while dropping just one stroke, a bogey on No. 9, to finish under-par in all three rounds of the tournament with a third-round 2-under, 70. The New York, N.Y., native finished in a tie for ninth place, his third top-10 finish in five events this season.
• Bryan Kim finished out his second round with two birdies and two bogeys over his final nine holes, carding a 2-over, 74, in the morning. The freshman went low in the third round, firing a 4-under, 68, in the third round – the best individual round by a Blue Devil for the event. Kim started the round on No. 9 and made bogey on No. 12 to move to 1-over, but immediately bounced back with a birdie on the par-5 13th. He took advantage of the next par-5 as well, making birdie on No. 17 to stand 1-under through his first nine holes. Another birdie, this time on No. 4, pushed Kim to 2-under, before the Brookeville, Md., native closed his round strong with back-to-back birdies on holes Nos. 7 and 8 to wrap up the 4-under round. Kim ended the tournament in a tie for 15th place, his second top-15 finish in his last three events.
• Ian Siebers finished his second round at 3-over, 75, but closed his round with momentum after chipping in for birdie on the 232-yard, par-3, sixth hole. The senior played…
