STARKVILLE – Mississippi State’s men’s golf program is ranked No. 18 in the first NCAA rankings released by Spikemark and Clippd on Wednesday. Additionally, Hunter Logan and Josep Serra are both among the top 100 individuals in the nation, checking in No. 23 and No. 95 respectively.
State is one of eight SEC teams currently ranked inside the top 25 and competed against six top-10 teams this fall.
The Bulldogs earned three top-five finishes and were among the top 10 in each of their five tournaments. State also won its match against No. 29 LSU at the SEC Match Play event. MSU placed as high as second at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational.
As a team State is averaging 71.49 strokes per individual round and has fired 58.2 percent of their individual rounds under par.
Logan has been the Bulldogs’ individual leader this year, and he started the fall with a strong showing, claiming his first collegiate victory at the season-opening Visit Knoxville Collegiate. He has since also added two more top-10 finishes this season, including a tie for second at the Blessings.
Serra has also had a strong fall, earning three top-20 finishes since making his Division I debut in September. Serra has shot par or better in nine of his 14 round this season, a mark that is second on the team only to Logan.
The Spikemark College Golf Ranking System was created by Mark Broadie, the inventor of Strokes Gained. Points are awarded based on Strokes Gained in each event and include stroke differentials at every finish position. The ranking offers a modest premium for better finishes, meaning good finishes help more than bad placings hurt a player and team. There are no advantages or disadvantages for the strength or size of the field at an event.
Mississippi State will return to the course on Feb. 19 at the Watersound Invitational hosted by Florida State in Panama City Beach, Florida.
