East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s women’s golf team posted a 1-under par 287 for the second-straight round and finished in ninth place among 18 teams at UCF Challenge, played at Eagle Creek Country Club (par-72, 6,367 yards) in Orlando, Fla.
The Spartans finished with a three-day, 54-hole total of 3-over par 867 (293-287-287).
North Carolina led from start to finish and topped the field at 18-under par 846 (279-280-287), five shots ahead of second place Kansas (13-under par 851). Miami placed third at 11-under par 853, with the College of Charleston and Northwestern rounding out the top-five teams at 8-under par 856.
Junior Katie Lu shot a 1-under par 71 in the final round and was the top finisher for the Spartans, tying for eighth place at 5-under par 211 (70-70-71).
Junior Brooke Biermann finished in a tied for 21st place at 1-under par 215 (74-70-71). After an opening 2-over par 74, Biermann closed out the tournament with back-to-back under-par rounds.
Sophomore Paula Balanzategui shot a 1-under par 71 in the third round to finish in a tie for 36th place at 1-over par 217 (73-73-71).
Senior Leila Raines tied for 70th place at 10-over par 226 (78-74-74) and junior Shannon Kennedy tied for 72nd place at 11-over par 227 (76-75-76).
Playing as an individual, freshman Ana Sofia Murcia had the best Michigan State round of the tournament, firing a 3-under par 69. She tied for 14th place at 3-under par 213 (71-73-69)..
Michigan State returns to play on Feb. 18-19, hosting the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational at Palm Aire Champs Course in Sarasota, Fla.
