GOODYEAR, Ariz. (April 8, 2024) – Washington State women’s golf wrapped up day one at the Bobcat Desert Classic in a tie for eighth place among the 17-team field, at 2-over, 290 at the par-72 Golf Club of Estrella.
“Madelyn and Alice both had a strong start to this week’s tournament with under-par rounds.” said Head Coach Sofie Aagard. “The course is set up for birdie opportunities and they were able to capitalize on short holes where they had wedges in on approach shots. Madelyn led the team in birdies with five of them. We are seeing progress from everyone in putting after having focused on this over the last month, working on green reading and speed. It will be a warmer day in the sun tomorrow and we hope to take greater advantage of the fact that the ball is flying further in the heat than we have seen earlier this spring in cold and rain.”
Junior Madelyn Gamble finished round one at 2-under, 70 to sit tied for eighth in the 98-player field. After going 2-over early, Gamble birdied holes eight and nine to get back to even before scattering three more birdies on the back nine to get to the 2-under mark for the day.
Freshman Alice Johansson ended day one at 1-under, 71 and will enter day two in a tie for 14th. She birdied hole eight and parred every other hole on the front nine to sit at 1-under going into the back nine. There, she mixed a bogey and another birdie in between seven more pars to remain at 1-under for the day.
Junior Emily Cadwell is in a tie for 40th after day one, shooting a 2-over, 74. She bogeyed her first hole of the day, but birdied holes five and eight to sit 1-under through nine holes. Despite adding another birdie on hole 12, a pair of birdies and a double bogey down the stretch put her round-one score at 74.
Junior Sarah Skovgaard-Bils wrapped up round one in a tie for 54th at 3-over, 75. A bogey on hole three and birdies on six and nine put her at 1-under at the turn, before four bogeys on the back nine sent her to 3-over for the day.
Sophomore Hannah Harrison is tied for 73rd after a 5-over, 77 day. She used three birdies and three bogeys to sit even after nine holes, and after a run of bogeys on the back nine, a birdie on hole 17 led her to the 5-over finish to the round.
The Cougars will continue with days two and three of the 2024 Bobcat Desert Classic on Tuesday and Wednesday before hosting the 2024 Pac-12 Championship…
