PULLMAN, Wash. – No. 14 Arizona Women’s Golf begins its postseason competition with the 2024 Pac-12 Championships on Sunday at Palouse Ridge Golf Course at Washington State University. With a stellar spring season already in the books that included two individual victories and a team championship at the Gators Invitational, the Wildcats will look to continue their strong play this week. Arizona has a history of success at the conference championships having finished fifth or better in every Pac-12 postseason event since 1994. That streak also includes seven team championships for the Wildcats and five runner-up finishes.
“Postseason golf is the time of the year that we work towards and practice all season for,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “This team has really grown and developed since our first fall tournament, and it’s been inspiring to see them compete and excel at a high level. Our schedule and success throughout the year has prepared us for this and the next step in our journey is the Pac-12 Championships. I am excited to see our team come out and compete while representing the University of Arizona with pride as always.”
The Wildcats’ high-level success this season began with graduate senior Gile Bite Starkute winning her first college event at the 18-hole Match in the Desert where she tied the program record for lowest round ever with an 8-under 64. Starkute’s performance propelled Arizona to shoot 14-under par as a team, which also tied the lowest team round in school history. The Cats went on to sweep the team and individual titles at the Gators Invitational as sophomore Nena Wongthanavimok earned the first victory of her collegiate career. Starkute and Wongthanavimok joined freshman Charlotte Back as Wildcats to earn Pac-12 Golfer of the Week honors in 2024.
Coach Ianello’s lineup for the event includes Back, Starkute and Wongthanavimok alongside sophomore Julia Misemer and junior Lilas Pinthier. Junior Carolina Melgrati will miss the event due to an illness.
The format of the Pac-12 Championships is the standard “five count four” scoring that takes the four lowest scores from a five-golfer lineup. Teams will play 54 holes over three days. This is the second time the conference championships have been played at Palouse Ridge Golf Course with Arizona finishing in third in the 2012 tournament…
