CLE ELUM, Wash. – Virginia posted the third best score of the day to move up one spot to third place following the second round of the NCAA Cle Elum Regional. The 24th-ranked Cavaliers shot 8-over 296 on Tuesday and stand at 9-over 585 following 36 holes of play at Tumble Creek Club in Cle Elum, Wash.
The regional is one of six three-round competition sites where the top five teams advance to the NCAA Championships at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. on May 17-22.
All-American Amanda Sambach led UVA during the second round, shooting 1-under 71 to finish the day in fifth place at 1-under 143. She was one of just six players to shoot below par during the round that saw teams tee off with temperatures in the 40s.
Celeste Valinho, UVA’s first-round leader, shot 4-over 76 and dropped back to 12th place at 1-over 145. Megan Propeck moved up to 17th place at 148 after shooting 2-over 74 for the second consecutive day. Jaclyn LaHa is in 22nd place at 149 and Rebecca Skoler is 61st at 159. LaHa turned in a second-round score of 75 while Skoler shot 81.
Top-ranked Stanford took over the team lead after posting a round of 14-under 274. The Cardinal enters the final round at 18-under 558, 12 shots ahead of second-place Duke. Arizona State is six shots behind UVA at 15-over 591 while San Jose State and Long Beach State are tied fifth at 19-over 595.
Virginia will play with Stanford and Duke during Wednesday’s final round. Those teams will start from the first tee at noon ET.
Virginia is playing in the 18th NCAA Regional in the 21-year history of the program. The Cavaliers have advanced to the NCAA Championships 13 times, including last season.
