WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Penn State women’s golf team is currently 17th after the opening round at the Landfall Tradition.
The Nittany Lions shot 20-over on Friday as strong winds wreaked havoc on the field with no team finishing the opening day in red figures.
“The high winds definitely raised par today,” mentioned head coach Denise St. Pierre. “The green speeds are also very fast, and we have been practicing on much slower greens, so that is an adjustment we are going to have to make going into the weekend.”
Michigan (1-over) has a one-shot lead over Virginia while South Carolina, Texas and Clemson are each tied for third at 3-over.
Junior Mathilde Delavallade (Royan, France) paced the way for Penn State in the opening round finishing 3-over, 75, including a 2-under final nine holes and is currently tied for 45th.
Senior Sarah Willis (Eaton, Ohio) fired a 4-over, 76, and is tied for 55th after going out in 4-over, but coming in at even-par.
Freshman Drew Nienhaus (St. Louis, Mo.) and senior Taylor Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) rounded out the countable team scores with rounds of 78 and 79, respectively.
Junior Isha Dhruva (Katy, Texas) finished the opening round 9-over.
Penn State will once again begin on the 10th hole tomorrow with tee times beginning at 8:30 p.m.
