UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men’s golf team dropped a pair of tough 3-2 decisions to Northwestern and Rutgers on the final day of Big Ten Match Play at Hammock Beach Resort’s Ocean Course Saturday.

Sophomore James Allen and freshman Jake Griffin both went 2-0 on the day to highlight Saturday’s action.

Allen needed just 13 holes to earn a 6&5 win over Northwestern’s John Driscoll in Saturday morning’s match. Allen got out to a four-stroke lead through the first nine holes and never looked back. He kept his momentum going in the afternoon match, defeating Rutgers’ Weston Jones 5&4 in 14 holes.

Freshman Jake Griffin stayed strong down the stretch against Northwestern’s James Imai to earn a 3&1 victory. The match was tied through the first 13 holes, but Griffin picked up three strokes in the final five to secure the win. Griffin then led for the entirety of the afternoon match against Rutgers, picking up a 2&1 win over Cade Anderson.

The Nittany Lions return to action next weekend at Florida’s Gator Invitational. Action is slated for Saturday and Sunday in Gainesville, Fla.
