MADISON, Wis. — The women’s golf program is participating in the Folds of Honor program for the Spring 2022 season. Players will take turns sporting a special golf bag at tournaments in honor of a veteran with ties to the campus community.
“Our program is truly humbled to support the Folds of Honor Military Tribute program,” said head coach Todd Oehrlein. “It is an honor to support their efforts to recognize the sacrifices of the men and women who have served our country.”
Folds of Honor raises money to give scholarships to children and spouses of America’s service members. In partnership with the Golf Coaches’ Association of America and the Women’s Golf Coaches Association, the team receives a golf bag in which the veteran’s name, rank and branch are displayed. The players rotate in carrying the bag from tournament to tournament.
“Folds of Honor is an amazing organization that inspires us to honor the sacrifice of great soldiers through educating their legacy,” said assistant coach Kristen Simpson.
The Badgers are representing United States Army Sergeant First Class Richard Connell. He served for over 20 years and was stationed in multiple locations, ending his career at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin. He is a four-time recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal, a Humanitarian Service Award recipient and a seven-time recipient of the Army Good Conduct award.
“We will proudly carry a bag each week recognizing US Army Sergeant First Class, Richard Connell,” said Oehrlein. “Due to his selfless service and that of his family, we are able to enjoy so many of our freedoms.”
SFC Connell’s daughter, Emily, will be the scholarship recipient. Emily is a sophomore at UW-Madison majoring in biology with hopes to work as a horticulturist.
“Two traits I have proudly learned from my father are to be selfless and to always try my best,” said Emily.
Anyone is welcome to donate to Folds of Honor through Wisconsin’s link.
2022 Update: Wisconsin women’s golf raised $2,805.72 for Folds of Honor. The team and SFC Connell and his daughter Emily were also honored at a Wisconsin men’s basketball game in March.
