Women's Golf Concludes Play at Briar's Creek Invitational

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C.  – The Penn State women’s golf team finished tied for ninth in the 17-team field at the ninth-annual Briar’s Creek Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.

Campbell (11-under) ran away from the field with an 11-stroke victory over Michigan (even-par) following a 4-under final round. College of Charleston used the day’s low round of 9-under to move up four spots and into third for the week at 8-over, 872, while UCF (15-over) and Boston College (17-over) rounded out the top-five.

The morning began with most players closing out the second round of competition by completing anywhere from two to six holes before the final round began.

“The second round didn’t close as we had hoped but we held it together in the final round,” mentioned head coach Denise St. Pierre. “We had some wins in that we did some things well. It was good to see Sarah come back strong from injury and compete chasing old man par, a nice under-par round from Drew to open the tournament and Isha had a very consistent week.”

Penn State was led by senior Sarah Willis (Eaton, Ohio) who carded a 1-over, 73, in her final round sandwiching one birdie between a pair of bogeys to finish the week tied for 24th at 5-over, 221.

“My short game really paid off for me this week,” commented Willis. “I’m still not hitting it the way I’d like after coming back from my injury, but I was able to play my misses and save par with good up and downs and lag putting.”

Junior Isha Dhruva (Katy, Texas) registered her lowest round of the week with a 2-over, 74, in the third round to climb 13 spots on the day and finish the tournament tied for 36th with classmate Mathilde Delavallade (Royan, France) who joined senior Taylor Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) with matching 4-over, 74’s, to round out the countable team scores for the final round.

Freshman Drew Nienhaus (St. Louis, Mo.) struggled in her final round with an 8-over, 80.

“Overall, we have some things to work toward for the next event and can take some of the wins from this tournament as we move forward,” concluded St. Pierre.

Penn State will take the next month off before returning to the course at Ohio State for the Lady Buckeye Invitational on April 15-16 in its final tune-up before the B1G Championships the following week.
