Women’s Golf Up Two Spots at B1G Championships

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Penn State women’s golf team climbed into the top-10 of the Big Ten Championships during the second round of play on Saturday afternoon at Fox Chapel Golf Club.

The Nittany Lions shaved eight strokes off their opening round total from yesterday finishing the second round 12-over, 296, and currently sit tied for 10th with Minnesota at 32-over for the championship.

Michigan used the low round of the day at 3-under to leap Michigan State and move into a four-stroke lead at 2-under for the championship. Northwestern was the big mover of the day matching the Wolverines at 3-under and moving up four spots and into a tie with Michigan State for second at 2-over through 36 holes. Illinois sits in fourth at 4-over for the championship while Ohio State and Maryland are tied for fifth at 9-over for the weekend.

Senior Taylor Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) paced the team with a 2-over, 73, highlighted by a 1-under back nine, her opening nine of the day. Waller climbed 11 spots and is currently tied for 43rd on the weekend.

“Taylor really had it going today,” commented head coach Denise St. Pierre. “I was also very pleased to see both freshmen playing well and continuing to show consistency.”

Junior Mathilde Delavallade (Royan, France) and freshman Drew Nienhaus (St. Louis, Mo.) were right behind Waller on the day carding matching rounds of 3-over, 74. Delavallade paces Penn State through the opening 36 holes in a tied for 36th at 7-over for the weekend.

Freshman Katie Scheck (Greensboro, Ga.) rounded out the four countable scores on Saturday with her second-straight 4-over, 75 and sits tied for 43rd at 8-over for the weekend.

Senior Sarah Willis (Eaton, Ohio) and junior Isha Dhruva (Katy, Texas) and senior Sarah Willis (Eaton, Ohio) concluded the second round with scores of 7-over and 11-over, respectively.

“It may be hard for us to catch the top teams, but we can still be one of the best teams in tomorrow’s final round and end the championship strong,” St. Pierre concluded.

The Nittany Lions are back in action for the third and final round of competition tomorrow morning with tee times beginning at 9:07 a.m.
