PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – Georgia Tech and Wake Forest both rallied from early deficits in Sunday’s match play semifinals and will play for the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship on Monday at Shark’s Tooth Golf Course at Watersound Club. Georgia Tech and Wake Forest are the two winningest men’s golf schools in ACC history, both with 18 overall titles. Georgia Tech won its first championship in 1985 and has captured 10 of the last 15. The Deacons are seeking their first title since 1989.
The No. 2-seed Yellow Jackets led in just one match against No. 3 Florida State at the turn, but slowly gained momentum on the back nine. After Florida State’s Frederik Kjettrup gave the Seminoles an early lead with a 4&3 victory over Bartley Forrester, Georgia Tech responded with three consecutive wins.
Georgia Tech’s Christo Lamprecht, who was three down through seven holes against FSU’s Michael Sakane, birdied No. 8 and had pars on No. 10 and No. 13 to even the match. Lamprecht then birdied No. 14, eagled No. 15 and held on for a 1UP victory and Tech’s first point. In group five, Georgia Tech’s Connor Howe broke open a match that was tied through 10 against Patrick McCann with five consecutive wins to cruise to a 5&3 victory.
Needing just one point to win the overall match, Georgia Tech’s Benjamin Reuter made a two-putt par on 17 to go 1UP over Brett Roberts and then traded pars on 18 for the clinching point.
In the second semifinal, Wake Forest also trailed in three matches against the top seed North Carolina after the front nine. UNC freshman David Ford gave the Tar Heels an early point with a 4&3 victory over Parker Gillam.
In the second match, Wake’s Alex Fitzpatrick bounced back from a two-hole deficit to tie the score through 12 holes against Peter Fountain. Fitzpatrick made back-to-back birdies on No. 13 and No. 14 to regain the lead, and finish with a 3&1 victory.
With the match hanging in the balance, Wake Forest’s Mark Power rallied from three down to win holes 12, 13 and 14 and even the score. After trading scores over the final five holes of regulation, Power made birdie on the first extra hole for a 1UP victory. It was the only time he led during the match. Just minutes later, Michael Brennan clinched the win for Wake Forest with a par on 18 after making birdie on 17.
