PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Penn State women’s golf team carded the fourth-lowest final round on Sunday afternoon to finish 10th at the B1G Championships at Fox Chapel Golf Club. The Nittany Lions fired an 8-over, 292, finishing the weekend at 40-over par.
Michigan was able to hold of Michigan State and win the championship by four strokes with a three-round total of 5-over while the Spartans finished the weekend 9-over. Ohio State used the low round of the day to climb a pair of spots finishing the weekend in a tie with Northwestern for third at 12-over while Illinois rounded out the top-five at 18-over for the championship.
“I am very proud at the way the team continued to improve throughout the weekend, even when it easily could have gone another direction,” mentioned head coach Denise St. Pierre.
Senior Sarah Willis (Eaton, Ohio) was today’s big mover as she carded one of just five rounds in red figures on Sunday in the 84-play field. Willis fired a 2-under, 69, to climb 22 spots and finish the weekend in the middle of the pack. Willis had four birdies to just two bogeys and carded a 2-under, 34, on the front nine which was her inward nine of the afternoon.
“I struggled the past few days with my putting, but today I finally got the speed of the greens down and my putts started to drop,” commented Willis. “I was able to manage my miss hits with some pretty amazing up and downs. I had a lot of fun today and was so happy I was able to help the team score.”
Freshman Drew Nienhaus (St. Louis, Mo.) fired a 1-over, 72, during her final round and was Penn State’s highest finisher of the weekend in a tie for 33rd at 10-over for the weekend.
Junior Mathilde Delavallade (Royan, France) carded a 4-over, 75, during her final round highlighted by a pair of birdies of her final three holes of the round. Delavallade finished the weekend in a tie for 36th at 11-over.
Junior Isha Dhruva (Katy, Texas) rounded out the countable team scores with a 5-over, 76, while senior Taylor Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) and freshman Katie Scheck (Greensboro, Ga.) rounded out the day with matching rounds of 6-over, 77.
