FRENCH LICK, Ind. — With a 219 (+3) total, graduate student Brendan O’Reilly posted a top 10 individual finish while guiding the University of Michigan men’s golf team to a 13th place finish today (Sunday, May 1) at the 2022 Big Ten Championships. The Wolverines recorded a 919, 54-hole total to close the event, which was held at the Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort.

With four of the five Wolverines playing in their first Big Ten Championships, including three freshmen, U-M posted back-to-back team totals of 303 to sit 13th after 36 holes. With strong winds hampering play in the final round, the Maize and Blue closed with a 313 to post a 919 total and stay 13th.

In his first career championship, O’Reilly paced the Wolverines posting a season-best tie for sixth with a 219 (+3) total after carding rounds of 73 (+1), 71 (-1) and 75. O’Reilly’s finish marks just the second time in his career he has recorded a top 10 finish, along with a runner-up nod at the 2021 Boilermaker Invitational.

Freshman Hunter Thomson was able to use a final round 73 (+1) to close with a 226 total and crack the top 30 individually as he tied for 27th. Rounding out U-M’s starting five, sophomore Will Anderson closed 60th (236), while freshmen Bavake Sihota was 63rd (238) and Yuqi Liu was 68th (246).

Illinois (286-292-307) was able to rally and fend off Michigan State (276-301-309/886) to claim the 2022 team title by just a single shot with an 885 total. Maryland used a final-round low 302 to finish third at 887.
